Micah Kamohoaliʻi
Kumu Hula for Hālau Na Kipuʻupuʻu and Fashion Designer, Dezigns by Kamohoalii
Micah Kamohoali’iAs the kumu hula (hula master) of Hālau Nā Kīpuʻupuʻu, a hula school on the island of Hawaiʻi, hula has been a part of Micah Kamohoaliʻi’s life since the age of three. Through this dance tradition, he has learned the history and stories of his people. Various cultural festivals invite the hālau he leads to perform across the islands. Equally well-known for the quality of the kapa, or mulberry bark cloth, he makes for dancer regalia, Kamohoaliʻi has helped revive the practice of creating kapa among the hula community. Kamohoaliʻi has taken the fashion community by storm, having his Hawaiʻi-inspired designs featured in esteemed Fashion Week showcases in New York, Milan, London and Paris. Kamohoaliʻi has been featured on the pages of Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New York Times and Forbes. “I hope we leave the impression that there’s a connection between people, place, honoring your history and to have respect and love for everything that’s around you. We’re teaching Hawaiian values to the world and sharing our aloha.”

Naomi “Sissy” Lake-FarmNaomi “Sissy” Lake-Farm, a Hawaiian cultural practitioner and kumu hula says, “As caretakers of the land, we share the history and heritage of Maui through the artifacts, photographs, and documents that are entrusted to our care. It is essential that the cultural roots and history that define our community will continue to be there for future generations.” The Maui Historical Society is committed to preserving and sharing Maui’s history with visitors and the local community with cultural events throughout the year.

Rick Barboza
Papahana Kuaola, Co-founder
Rick BarbozaThe distinctive ridges of the Koʻolau mountains are a riot of green in the contrasting sunlit ridges and shaded valleys. They’re similar to the ridges in the elegant leaf of a rare species of kalo (taro) growing far below at the idyllic Papahana Kuaola, a community farm co-founded by Rick Barboza, a living botanical garden. Guiding them to replant taro huli (cuttings), Rick laughs with his visitors. He knows the mud may wash off their arms and legs in the waterfall later, but it will leave an indelible memory of what it means to mālama ʻāina (care for the land).
